Delavan UCC Message - May 13, 2012 - Confirmation Charge

May 13, 2012

On Confirmation and Communion Sunday, the scripture ( John 15:9-17) challenges us to reaffirm our faith and to live to our calling.  God has begun a work in us that only God can see, it is our choice to live to our calling. Rev. Laura McLeod gives her message to the congregation of the United Church of Christ in Delavan, WI on May 13, 2012; the sixth Sunday of Easter.

Scripture Reading:  John 15:9-17 As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

Delavan UCC Message - April 1, 2012 - Into Jerusalem

April 1, 2012

As we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, we contemplate what it means to be fellowers of Christ.  Is this a day of celebration or bold action?

Rev. Laura McLeod gives her message to the congregation of the United Church of Christ in Delavan, WI on April 1, 2012; Palm Sunday the sixth Sunday of Lent.

Scripture Reading:  Mark 11: 1-11 Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem-  When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, “Why are you doing this?” just say this, “The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.” ’ They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, ‘What are you doing, untying the colt?’ They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!  Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’  Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Delavan UCC Message - March 25, 2012 - Heart Promises

March 25, 2012

Do you ever get discouraged by the darkness in our world?  Are you frustrated by the darkness of the human heart? The prophet Jeremiah knows your pain and yet speaks God's word of hope to the weary Israellites... and to us.

Rev. Laura McLeod gives her message to the congregation of the United Church of Christ in Delavan, WI on March 25, 2012; fifth Sunday of Lent.

Scripture Reading:  Jeremiah 31: 31-34. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Delavan UCC Message - March 18, 2012 - Rich in Love

March 18, 2012

Do we take God's love and grace for granted?  Are we flip about this amazing grace in which we stand?  Is a term like "sinfulness" only for the serious sinner?  The Psalmist challenges us to think of our sin as a way of opening us to God's love and grace.

Rev. Laura McLeod gives her message to the congregation of the United Church of Christ in Delavan, WI on March 18, 2012; fourth Sunday of Lent.
